It is a good practice to have a New Year's resolution. Though a lot of people make resolutions only a few will be able to really do what they have said they will do. As 2010 starts, it is a good time of the year to schedule a declutter day. This should be the time to declutter your home and organize every nook and cranny. Not only will your home be neat and clean but this will be a pleasant improvement for your life.

Here are some benefits of de-cluttering:

1. Your home will have a relaxed and peaceful ambiance.

2. There will be more physical space which can rub on your emotional space.

3. Your home will no longer be an embarrassment when you have visitors.

4. Self-esteem will be boosted because of your neat and clean environment.

5. An organized home is one benefit and you need not be stressed looking for things.

6. It is a fact that order brings clarity of thought. You will think better if there is no clutter.

7. You save time when things are better organized and easy to find.

8. There will be less time cleaning your home.

9. The sense of achievement that you decluttered and organized your home is satisfying.

10. You can save money if you convert some unnecessary things or items to cash by selling them.

Although time and effort will have to be made to declutter your home, the resolution to do it is already a start. If you have a large home with many rooms, schedule the task by room. You can start your decluttering days during weekends or when there are holidays that results in long weekends. You do not have to do the work in one day. A schedule declutter day for each room or area will help you to better organize the details of your New Year's resolution.

It is also necessary to have a deadline to accomplish complete declutter and organization of your home. You can start, for instance, during the beginning of summer and end towards autumn. Some people make their timetable run through until it is Christmas time again. The Christmas deadline is a good motivator especially when you expect family and friends to visit you.

Another way to fulfill your New Year's resolution is to declutter a space in your home a few hours every day until the whole house has been worked on. You can start with the bedroom then move out to other parts of the home. You can "baby step" the decluttering and before you know it, your home will be speck and span.

To aid you in fulfilling your New Year's resolution, here are some decluttering tips:

1. Determine what you want to declutter. Look around your home and pinpoint areas and things that need to be put away or organized.

2. Be practical. Do not declutter your home all at one time. This will only lead to more clutter. Make a schedule and follow it as much as you can.

3. Use a system. Schedule each room. If the room is large then divide the room and schedule each portion.

4. Get rid of paper. Paper is one of those that is kept and builts up through the years. Shred or toss papers that are not important. Organize those documents and store in a dry and safe place.

5. Give or donate old clothes to charitable organizations. Clothes that are no longer needed can be disposed or sold. Seasonal clothes like winter jackets can be placed in vacuumed packs and stored.

6. Get help. You can ask the assistance of your family members to declutter the home. Children can assist when it is time for their rooms. Your spouse or older children can help in moving furniture. Declutter day can be part of family activity too.

7. Enjoy the activity and do not take it as a cumbersome chore. Remember, once you declutter and organize your home, you are fulfilling something that you have set for yourself and this is a great accomplishment.
