You look around your home and see clutter building up. Suddenly, you decide to declutter your home but do not know where to start. You start by the firm determination to declutter and organize your home. A general declutter day may be scheduled or a room by room or area by area approach can be made. Whatever schedule that you decide upon, it should be followed so that peace of mind and fulfillment results in the end.
When you expect influx of gifts during occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, Christmas or baptisms then the key to stop clutter is by pre-organizing. Look around your space and decide where to place the added items. If you are expecting gifts for children then decide which old toys or clothing can be disposed of. You can have a box for which to place the new items or for the old ones that can be given or thrown away to make room for the new ones. You declutter then pre-organize which will take off the stress after the occasion or event.
For sure, you have items and things that you keep but do not really use anymore. These items might be there for emotional reasons but they take up space so you have to declutterit then organize where it can be stored. Regularly check for toys, clothes, paper or documents, etc. that you might not need anymore. Children outgrow clothes faster and you may have clothes that are out of style. These can all be donated to the Salvation Army or given to the less fortunate in your community. There are also things that need to be weeded out. Toss or shred documents that you no longer need to keep. Put in a garbage bag, the clothes and toys that are not usable anymore.
If you want to declutter and organize, you can decide on a theme for your home. It can be a color scheme or a motif. Once you decide on this, you can take out things that do not go with the theme. A theme can help you decide which items to keep and which ones to store for future use.
"Clean as you go" is not only a fast food operations slogan but can be applied to your home as well. Everyone in your household must follow this rule. Even small children can follow this by placing their toys on designated places once they are done with playing. The slogan can most apply to the kitchen. When you clean immediately your work space, organize and store utensils and ingredients, you are decluttering and this is a very good practice.
When you look around your home, imagine a sign that says "Start here." You can then follow through on your decision to declutter and organizeyour space as you schedule it.
